10TH INTERNATIONAL COMMUNICATION DAYS/ DIGITAL CAPITALISM AND COMMUNICATION SYMPOSIUM

The main theme of the International Communication Days, organized with a different theme every year by Üsküdar University Faculty of Communication, will be Digital Capitalism and Communication in its 10th year. The symposium will host nationally and internationally distinguished keynote speakers and will be held on 16-17-18th of May, 2023. The symposium will be held face-to-face and online (zoom meetings/webinars) and simultaneous Turkish-English interpretation will be provided during the keynote speeches.

Digital technologies transform and reshape the communication sector and the media in several ways. Communication studies intend to review, understand and explain these transformations and restructuring in the industry. With digitalization, on the one hand important transformations have occurred in the production styles and relations in the existing media outlets and on the other hand, new media platforms have emerged. All of these result in the need to review again in detail economic and political structure of the media. The number of studies in communication studies literature has also increased significantly in the recent years. With the introduction of digital technologies, we observe that communications and media industries act fast to integrate these technologies into their industries to strengthen and sustain their position and role in the capitalist system. This also means the integration of the communications and the media industry into digital capitalism. While people working in the media are seen as the workers, labourers of digital capitalism, the content produced by these people are defined as the commodity of digital capitalism. The symposium which will be held with the main theme Digital Capitalism and Communication aims to review media and communication with a range of perspectives in this new capitalist era which has been reshaped with the digital technologies and to provide a basis to discuss this at an academic level and carry out detailed studies.

The 10th International Communication Days / Digital Capitalism and Communication Symposium will last for three days. Esteemed scholars Professor Dan Schiller (University of Illinois), Professor Gamze Yücesan Özdemir (Ankara University), Professor Gillian Doyle (University of Glasgow), Professor Halil Nalçaoğlu (Bilgi University), Professor Paško Bilić (University of Zagreb), Professor Victor Pickard (University of Pennsylvania), who are acknowledged internationally and experts in their fields, will be joining as invited speakers to the symposium.
